Balance of Power

This is the third of Mr. Patterson’s Kerry Kilcannon novels. I’ve read all of his previous books, but it was nice to get a refresher course on who’s who, what previously happened to whom, why, etc.

This is a contemporary story set primarily in Washington DC and San Francisco. Kerry is now in his first year as US President and is about to marry his true love, Lara. A gun tragedy shocks the country and hits hard at the White House. This makes his battle with Congress for gun control laws all the more important. However, several members of Congress are ‘owned’ by the SSA (the author’s version of the NRA).

The author has done a great deal of research on gun violence, the workings of Congress, and the relative laws. He goes into extremely detailed descriptions of political haggling, depositions, and Senate hearings. This was just too detailed for me and made for a difficult read. But, hey, if you’re into political stuff, go for it!

In fiction, as in real life, we see that everyone is motivated by greed and power, not by serving those who elected him/her. No, Mr. Miller did not write this review, I did.

"Inflammatory!" -Ellen Tanner Marsh, New York Times Bestselling Author

Excerpt: It was a delightful spring day in South Florida when I finally arrived at the home of a retired assassin to ghostwrite this book. I had questioned Bob Miller, the subject of this book, about why he wanted a ghostwriter. He already had six books under his belt, six more than I had in the market place. This book is actually four books in one. You can blame me for the inclusion of the last three. It was a condition I insisted upon if I were to endure spending weeks in a world I knew little or nothing about and didn’t want to know anything about. What you’re about to read is a transcript of those days I spent in the darkest corners of a man’s life.
