Naked Prey

This story is set in Minnesota, of course. It opens on a cold winter night, outside a tiny little town, with two people being hanged from an oak tree. The fact that one was a white female and the other a black male seems to send everyone into a major frenzy.

Lucas Davenport no longer works for the Minneapolis PD. He’s now the Director, Office of Regional Studies, a part of the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension office. Basically, he works for his former PD boss who now reports directly to the Governor. Lucas’ job, in a nutshell (according to the author), is to “fix shit”. So he is called in to find out who hanged these two people and why. His partner from the PD, Del Capslock, had followed him to the State job and joins him in the investigation.

Lucas and Del don’t take long to figure out who hanged the couple…the rich guy whose daughter had been kidnapped. They go to arrest Mr. Money Bags and find him and his wife dead. There’s quite a cast of characters including a crooked cop, crooked businessmen, questionable women, and the young, tomboy, twelve-going-on-twenty year old girl (Letty) who found the hanging bodies. The plot thickens when the killer goes after Letty. Then the leader of the stolen car ring and his wife are found dead. How many more will die? Will the real killer be caught?

I really enjoy John Sandford’s no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is writing style. And his main character, Lucas Davenport, is up there right behind Alex Cross in my personal favorite fictional characters category. We also get a short update on Lucas’ personal life as well. The next book should be interesting.
