Hoax

Yes, this is the next episode in the continuing saga of the almost-dysfunctional Karp family. It’s summer and Butch and the boys are at home in New York City…the boys trying to stay out of trouble (they witnessed a threat about murder) and Butch trying to decide whether or not to run for the office District Attorney.

Andrew Kane is way too wealthy for his own good, has an overly huge ego, and is the assumed next NYC mayor. His law firm’s clients include the NYPD and the Catholic Church…both for their less-than-honorable ‘mistakes’. Kane’s long arm of corruption and violence extends to New Mexico where he stashes pedophile priests at a ‘retreat’ funded by his client, the Catholic Church.

Marlene and Lucy just happen to be in the Taos area at a different retreat so Marlene can come to grips with her guilt for her past acts of violence. The local tribal cop just happens to have some murders to investigate…young boys have disappeared only to be found in graves with rosaries on their bodies.

Assorted characters include the archbishop, his unholy secretary, a creepy priest, crooked cops and street people. The story includes Marlene and Lucy’s adventures as well as Butch’s confrontations with Kane, murderers and the press. The author seems to go in really long, detailed narratives about semi-important characters and places, as well as the main characters.  I personally think the story could have been shorter. But, of course, it’s always interesting to see the how the Karp family members get in and out of tight spots. If you can stick with it, you’ll like the story.
