Title:  Buster and Duckie, A Tragic Out Island Romance  - Author:  Dr. Marc Binard - Pages:  62

First of all, this is NOT a little kids’ book. It is a riot to read as an adult, though. The puns, double entendres, and misspellings (on purpose, no doubt) made me smile or laugh out loud.

This tongue-in-cheek story is set in Abaco, Bahamas, and the good doctor says it’s based on a fact or two. Duckie (yes, a duck) is killed by the unleashed, uncaring Buster (yes, a dog). Buster is arrested, jailed and put on trial. His defense attorney is Jonnie Conchrun (the accompanying drawing leaves no doubt who this character is). He, of course, says Duckie’s lifemate, Duck Too, killed him for the insurance money. Isn’t it obvious? A new lifemate and wild spending so soon after Duckie’s death. Judge Judy (hmmm) tries to keep the courtroom in order. These are just a small sampling of the subtle, satirical, and just plain funny writing of Dr. Binard. Is he a doctor of medicine or humor? Office visits must be a bag of laughs. Oh, sorry, back to the book…The trial drags on (don’t they all?), but eventually the real truth comes out about Duckie’s life and death, as well as Buster’s fate.

This book gives the reader a) a lighthearted read about a dog and a duck; b) a glimpse at life on a small out island; and c) a look at society in general. The illustrations are a great addition to the book.
