Always Time to Die by Elizabeth Lowell

Carly May has been commissioned by Winifred Quintrell to come to Taos do the family history of the Castillo side of the Quintrell clan. The patriarch, Senator AJ Quintrell has just been buried; his son, Josh, New Mexico governor and wannabe president, is taking over the reins of the family’s wealth. No one wants the nosy Carly snooping into the past, but she’s bound and determined to do her job. Repeated ominous threats scare her, but don’t deter her. Dan Duran, a not-too-distant part of the Quintrell clan and mysterious as hell, decides to protect her. They find digging into the past can be eye opening and dangerous. Anyone can die at any time. What’s the secret no one wants revealed?

The family tree at the very beginning of the book should have been a warning that there would be way too many characters in this story…and there are. Even though I kept flipping back and forth to it, the story moves quickly and has surprises.
