I don't know who the first person was
that advised against bringing up the subjects of politics and religion, but you can be
assured it wasn't a politician, media executive, or preacher.
As an example, the
late President Kennedy said in a speech while on the campaign trail
and I
quote
.
"I was
thinking about my country the other day and decided that there are some real issues which
should be discussed. And they are not religious issues.
After
saying
"They are not religious issues", Mr. Kennedy spent the rest of that
speech talking about religion.
He said, "I
believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute--where no
religious prelate or minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote--where no
church or church school is granted any public funds or political preference--and where no
man is denied public office merely because his religion differs from the President who
might appoint him or the people who might elect him..."
I don't have a
problem with what Mr. Kennedy said there, but I can shorten it.
Here's what I
believe
I believe in an America
where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general
populace or the public acts of its officials. I believe in an America where there is no
religious vote--no anti-religious vote--no bloc voting of any kind.
The opinions of
others are important because they help us think out of the box. I'd be interested in
knowing what you believe.
