I have been privileged to play golf with several tour players. Sound like fun? It was fun, but as with everything else, there was a catch-22. These people don’t usually play from the white or even middle tees. Oh, no. It’s the Little Red Riding Hood tees, just as far back in the woods as the course designer could put them. I’ve played some par fours where the flag looked as if it were 1” tall, and I was thankful to be able to see the flag. There have been other holes where I had to take my playing partner’s word for where the hole was since I couldn’t see that far.

Since I did not want to look and sound like a spoiled child in front of these people, I had to come up with a plan. First, I added a stroke to every hole and played that hole accordingly. That really took a load of pressure off my game. Second, since I had no choice, I decided that the golf course was the opponent, not these pros, so instead of being envious of their shots, I would become a hitchhiker and enjoy their game regardless of how I was playing. This approach worked so well that I started using it all the time.
