I have read everything I’ve come across in golf books and trade publications about why golfers shank. I must have missed God being mentioned as one of the causes for hitting a shank in these various publications. But there must be something to it, because I’ve heard both low and high handicappers address God right after hitting a shank shot.

Here’s what I think happened and what I believe will correct it.

Set-up gremlins:

Standing too close to the ball
Shoulders and hips open
Too much weight on toes

Swing errors:

Tension (stiff arms)
Not trusting your swing.
